Being a Volunteer
The primary role of volunteers at Tufts Medical Center is to visit patients and families and offer non-medical support. We provide friendly conversation, comfort as well as complimentary newspapers, magazines, books, puzzles, playing cards and games.
The various assignments of our volunteers focus on helping to provide a positive hospital experience for patients and their families. They serve in a number of capacities, including:
- Visiting with patients and their families
- Assisting in the Emergency Room
- Providing wayfinding assistance through our ambassador program
What we ask of our volunteers
We are looking for long term volunteers who have the time to give and the desire to give back. We ask that our volunteers have at least conversational English, can commit to at least one shift per week and a minimum of 6 months of continuous service. Most of our volunteer assignments are for the mornings and afternoons, Monday through Friday. We do have a limited number of evening and weekend opportunities.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please call 617-636-1377 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m to set up an initial appointment with the Volunteer Coordinator. During this meeting, you will discuss possible assignments and review the mandated training process. If you are a patient looking to reach Volunteer Services, please call 617-636-1377 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
